Her first leading role was in 2002's surfing movie, Blue Crush. The film received positive reviews and grossed $40 million at the United States box office, allowing Bosworth wider exposure to a mainstream audience.
In 2005, Bosworth was cast as reporter Lois Lane in the new Superman movie, Superman Returns. Her Beyond the Sea co-star, Kevin Spacey, who also appears in Superman Returns, suggested Bosworth for the role to director Bryan Singer. Bosworth initially hesitated to take the role, citing the iconic nature of the character, and the potentially negative fan reaction to her performance, but eventually accepted. The film was released on June 28, 2006, and Bosworth has already signed on for a potential sequel.
