Cruz's first major films were "Jamón, jamón" and "Belle Époque", a film which won an Academy Award for Foreign Language Film. In 1997, she starred as Sofía Pangia, alongside Eduardo Noriega in "Abre los ojos", directed by Alejandro Amenábar, and in 2000 she appeared with Matt Damon in "All the Pretty Horses." In 1999, she appeared in Pedro Almodóvar's "Todo sobre mi madre" (All About My Mother), which won an Academy Award for Foreign Language Film. In late 2001, she appeared in the film "Vanilla Sky", the Hollywood remake of "Abre los ojos". Cruz co-starred with her best friend, Salma Hayek in the 2006 film, Bandidas.[6] In 2006, Cruz received highly favourable reviews for her performance in Pedro Almodóvar's "Volver." She won a Best Actress ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA Award. She is the first Spanish Actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role..  Speaks four languages: Spanish, Italian, French and English.  Had a highly publicized affair with actor Tom Cruise (Between Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes).
Woman on Top: Director Fina Torres presents a sweet and sour love story/fairy tale with WOMAN ON TOP, the quirky story of Isabella (Penelope Cruz) a top-notch chef and glowing beauty who suffers from motion sickness. Volavérunt: Intrigues, love and sex with the Duchess, jealousy from the queen, and finally the Duchess killed, but who killed her? Bigas Luna was able to ensemble a plot, which starts with few dialogs, good photographs, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (The Duchess) and Penélope Cruz showing something of their charms, one Jorge Perugorría (Goya painter) talking or whispering, probably making an effort to avoid his Cuban accent, Jordi Mollà as a lover and powerful minister, and Stefania Sandrelli, no matter how old she is, as a queen, and also a lover. The excitement really starts after mid film, and more than a drama it becomes a good thriller. Therefore do not miss anything from the first part of the film if you want to understand what really is going on. Moreover the film indicates how the famous paint of Goya "La Maja Desnuda" was done and what source the painter used. Certainly it was not the Duchess' body but the one of a nice gypsy lady, Pepita Tudó (Penélope Cruz), very "maja" by the way, we would say in Spanish.

Don't Move:  Successful doctor Timoteo (Castellitto) is shocked to discover that his fifteen-year-old daughter has been in a life-threatening motorcycle accident. As a fellow surgeon performs a dangerous procedure on her brain, Timoteo recalls a passionate affair he had before his daughter was born. He met the woman, Italia (Cruz), when his car broke down on the outskirts of the city. After an initial first encounter that resulted in Timoteo's brutally raping the hapless Italia, he found himself shunning his beautiful wife Elsa (Claudia Gerini) and returning to visit Italia more and more frequently. What began as a dark, shameful outlet for his disgust with his bourgeois existence grew to become a genuine love that would change Timoteo's--and Italia's--life forever. Dripping with sensuality, Castellitto's sprawling drama captures the exhilarations and frustrations of a man who is unable to come to grips with his ever-narrowing path in life.
